Kids Hope

What is Kid's Hope?
In 1993, the Commission on Children At-Risk found that children who have one stable adult in their lives do better in school and make better life choices.

Kids Hope USA
was created partially in response to these findings.

Kids Hope is a national program--active in over 500 schools and 30 states
--that shares a passion to help America’s most vulnerable children experience the “hope and a future” promised in Jeremiah 29:11. ( www.kidshopeusa.org) Our CA program is the first of what we hope will be many partnerships in Los Angeles Unified School District.

One Child. One Hour. One Church. One School.
Our goal at Christian Assembly is simple: to intervene in the lives of kids at Eagle Rock Elementary School with “no strings attached” and become agents of transformation, affirmation, and hope!

• A mentor is paired with one child
     -identified by the school
-meeting one hour a week for the duration of a school year.

• All mentoring happens at the school. We respect the separation of church and state on site. The children and their families are invited to participate in activities at the church
throughout the year.

During the first school year (2007-2008), we served 19 children: 5 girls and 14 boys in grades 2-6.  In the second school year (2008-2009) we served 35 children. In our third school year (2009-2010) we served 50 children. Our program continues to grow because of the amazing men and women of CA who commit to making a difference in the life of a child.  We add new students in grades K, 1 and 2 each fall.

Once a child is accepted into the program, they stay in the program until they graduate from elementary school or leave the school. If the mentor decides not to continue with the child, a new mentor is recruited to take their place.

Get Involved: One Hour at a Time

Here are the ways that YOU can be involved in loving the city through Kids Hope:

Mentor: Invest one hour per week in the life of a child! You will be screened, trained, and paired with one “at-risk” child at Eagle Rock Elementary. Mentors meet faithfully for one hour*, at the school, during the school day. At the end of each session they complete a daily progress report summarizing the mentoring session.
Commitment Level:
Weekly=1 hour plus 4 hours of training.
Mentor must commit for one school year (9 month
s).

*Mentors generally meet with students from 2:30-3:30pm

Prayer Partner:
Make a commitment to pray for one mentor/child pairing. Prayer partners contact the Mentor on a regular basis for a progress report on the relationship, the child's strengths and weakness, and any other prayer needs, including joys and concerns.
Commitment Level
: weekly, at prayer partners discretion.

Substitute Mentor: "Super-Subs" provide a critical link in maintaining a relationship that is being formed with the child. They provide continued one on one mentoring and affirmation for a child presently involved in Kids Hope when his/her regular Mentor is unavailable. The Super Subs primary role is to affirm the child. Their presence when the regular Mentor is absent says to the child, "Yes, we are commited to you". Super-Subs serve on an "on call" basis throughout the school year and help maintain consistency in student’s lives.
Commitment Level:
 as needed

Teacher Volunteer: We know you love kids--you work with them everyday! We'd love to tap into your expertise to help assist mentors with specific objectives (such as reading strategies or specific math concepts) as they come up during the year.  Your name and contact information would be listed as a resource for mentors to connect with when they are really stumped in how to help their child learn.
Commitment Level: on call

Volunteer Artist: Do you have a passion to share your talent with kids? Become part of our Kids Hope Creative Arts team. We dream of offering six week classes in Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Guitar, Karate...and more! We see this as "distributive justice"-- taking the talents we have and sharing them with kids who otherwise might never have the opportunity to explore and use their artistic gifts! This is a new element of our program, so lets start a conversation!
Commitment Level: on call, One day a week for six week blocks

Event Team Volunteer: Serve in areas of hospitality, prayer, and hosting special events (parties for the kids and their families at CA, assembling Christmas goody-bags, etc).
Commitment Level:
3 or 4 special events during the school year

We are so excited you are considering being a part of our "Kingdom Efforts" here in Eagle Rock. It is through the faithful service of our Mentors and Prayer Partners that we are able to reach out in our community and touch the precious lives of children at our public elementary school. How exciting to be the hands and feet and heart of Jesus for boys and girls who may never get a chance to hear of His love for them.
