Acts Series Artwork

Viv Stone: Acts 2 triptych

This Series on Acts has reminded me how grateful I am for the Holy Spirit and His work in my life and the church.

My first painting, "Love your wings"
This is an expression of God's grace & spirit claiming a human life. The personal, intimate and individual work he does in a soul that begins a dance for eternity.

The second, "Grace Danced"
Tongues of fire rest on the heads of these stallionesque beings who are filled with passion and power. God's grace and glory rests on us!

The third, "Harmony"
The dance continues with joy as God's people live, serve and love Him and one another!

Melanie Newcombe: Passageways & Errand of Messengers
“Rescue us, God!”, rose from my soul as I, my family and my surrounding community experienced a series of tragic losses this past year.  From this cry came the paper airplanes flying through my imagination.  Bursting forth, through pipes, impervious to water, the paper airplanes embark upon a mission of rescue.  In Passageways, alluding to our domestic spaces, they invite us along their journey.  Peter first professed to the crowds a message of rescue in Acts 2 inviting the people to join the apostles.  When those in the crowd were moved to repent and choose Jesus, they were filled with joy.  The paper airplanes evoke joy as they fly through the air.  Though ethereal as they glide, their flight is weighted with the purpose of their mission.

After the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, God sent the apostles with His power of healing and message of new life,  so the paper airplanes are sent out in Errand of the Messengers.  Peter told the crowd in Acts 3:19 “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord”.  The story of the paper airplane sculptures are because of these times of refreshing.  They are a symbol that tragedy does not have a lasting grip, but that we are rescued!

Phillip Griswold: Under the Overpass
This piece has references to inner/outer spaces, and perhaps the process of redemption of things through the passage of time. There is an exploration of the deep mystery in the idea of the spirit of God dwelling within a human- divinity within mortality, purity within the sullied, perfection within the marred. This re-making, re-lighting begins from the inside out, and is 'full of grace and truth'.

Andrew Stovesand:  Acts 2

I believe the response for the people when the Spirit comes is new life, and Acts has so much of that moving throughout the church and its people. I love the life the Spirit brings and wanted to try to represent that without being too forward but not too abstract either. I love painting like that, keeping things at a distance, not making it completely right there for the viewer. In that way, they have to give the piece a little more time and really look at it to enjoy it.
